Victor Osimhen sets New Record as Nigeria holds Benin to 1-1 draw

Victor Osimhen’s dramatic 81st-minute equalizer in Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 qualifying match against Benin Republic sealed Nigeria’s place at the top of Group D.

Benin took an early lead in the 16th minute, applying pressure on Nigeria to secure points to avoid a nail-biting final matchday.

Despite Benin’s solid defense, Osimhen rose to the occasion, heading in Moses Simon’s precise cross and leveling the game.

The goal was Victor Osimhen's 23rd for the Super Eagles levelling him on the record with Segun Odegbami.

The draw boosts Nigeria to 11 points, ahead of Benin’s 7, guaranteeing Nigeria’s group-winning status ahead of their final game against Rwanda next Monday in Uyo.

With qualification secured, Nigeria can now give fringe players a chance to shine and allow key players some rest.
